The Ould Lammas Fair, held each year in Ballycastle on the last Monday and Tuesday of August, is one of Ireland's oldest fairs!
The exact origin of the fair is uncertain. One theory is that it began as a result of the occupation of the area around Ballycastle by the MacDonnells of the Isles in the early part of the sixteenth century.

Why the fair should be held at the end of August rather than at the beginning, Lammas Day being 1st August, is uncertain, but it is thought that this may well have been due to the late harvest in the district.
The practical side of the fair is given over to sales of sheep and ponies while the visitor is drawn and entertained by the street stalls selling 'Dulse' a dried edible seaweed, and 'Yellow Man' a sweet confectionery, ornaments, clothes, bric-a-brac, fruit and many other items.
The traffic on both days of the fair is very heavy, particularly if the weather is favorable. Special attention is given to car parking facilities and of necessity the Diamond and main thoroughfares are closed to motorists.
