Cahir Castle

Cahir Castle is one of Ireland's largest and best preserved castles situated on a rocky island on the river Suir. The castle's attractions include an excellent audio-visual show called "Partly Hidden and Partly Revealed" (English/French/German/Italian). The statue ot Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole (1772-1842), one of Wellington's generals in the Peninsular War, stands on top of a Doric column. The spiral staircase to the top is closed off so it is not possible to share his panoramic view of the lakes - nor for that matter to examine too closely Sir Galbraith who is holding a fearsome looking cavalry sabre in his left hand....

Governor George Walker Memorial Garden located on Society Street next to the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall is a monument to the Governor of Derry during the Siege of 1689. The 9 foot statue originally stood on an 80 foot high pillar at the Royal Bastion on Mall Wall from 1832 to 1973 when the pillar was destroyed by a bomb. The inscription perpetuates the memory of Reverend George Walker for his bravery throughout the Siege.
